Course details

This course focuses on the application of crime analysis tools, techniques and methods to support crime reduction initiatives, criminal investigations, and effective deployment of police resources. Students will learn how to prepare crime statistics and crime maps, identify crime patterns, develop concise and effective written products, and attain a thorough understanding of the current state of the Crime Analysis field in Canada.

Prerequisite(s)

  • Admission to a Forensic credential program or permission of the Program Coordinator.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Define tactical, strategic and administrative crime analysis, and discuss crime reduction strategies (i.e., CompStat)
  • Identify the various data sources used in crime analysis, examine the strengths and weaknesses of Records Management Systems (RMS), and review the products of analysis.
  • Interpret police data and prepare statistics for tactical crime analysis.
  • Design and prepare tactical crime analysis bulletins and offender profiles.
  • Critique analysis products for clarity and effectiveness in law enforcement.
  • Use ArcGIS to prepare crime maps and articulate map contents.
  • Use i2 Analyst’s Notebook to present investigative material in a chart format.
  • Apply critical thinking skills to assess the value of data and reliability of data sources.
  • Retain familiarity with acronyms, jargon, terms and concepts in law enforcement in Canada.
