Course Overview
This course will be an introduction to general shop safety for pre-service Technology Education teachers. Topics covered will include an introduction to WHMIS, the safe handling and storage of materials, identification of hazards, accident prevention, and the use of emergency fire equipment.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- State BCIT policies regarding safety, treatment and reporting of injuries, and general shop safety.
- Adopt appropriate safety attitudes and policies.
- Recognize both safe and unsafe work situations.
- Select the appropriate classification of fire extinguisher.
- Explain and demonstrate how to put out a small fire with a portable fire extinguisher.
- Demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of WHMIS.
- Describe procedures for the safe handling, storage and disposal of materials.
- Describe safe operating procedures and processes for various types of shops.
