Course Overview
This course introduces the basic materials and processes encountered in construction from Division 6-9 of the MasterFormat System. Topics include basic terminology, physical and chemical properties, the manufacturing processes of various materials and how this affects their implementation in the construction project and introduces basic concepts of sustainable construction. Divisions include Division 6: Wood and Plastics, Division 7: Thermal and Moisture Protection, Division 8: Openings, and Division 9: Finishes.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Identify construction materials from the Divisions 6 - 9 of the MasterFormat and allocate them according to standard practice grouping.
- Describe the chemical and physical make-up of specified basic construction materials and assemblies.
- Identify basic methods of fabricating and installing the specified basic construction components.
- Explain the sequence of installing these basic components relating to authorities having jurisdiction.
- Describe issues pertaining to the sustainable uses of the construction materials covered.
