Course Overview
Building on the knowledge acquired in the course Construction Management 1 (CIVL 3033), this course introduces the student to estimating, bidding, and managing a typical civil engineering project. Estimating topics include construction equipment, planning, quantity take-offs, costing, and estimating software. Construction safety is emphasized utilizing resources provided by WorkSafeBC.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Read and interpret typical construction drawings and perform a detailed quantity take-off. [1,7]
- Describe common construction equipment and its applications and usual construction methods. [1]
- Determine productivity rates, crew sizes, and equipment required for a range of construction activities. [2]
- Prepare portions of a contractor's estimate using Heavybid software. [2, 5]
- Describe the concept of contingency in construction. [1,11]
- Describe various bidding strategies. [1, 11]
- Identify safety hazards commonly encountered on construction sites. [9]
- Present the roles and responsibilities of the employer, supervisor, and employee with regard to construction safety. [8]
- Draft an outline of a toolbox safety meeting identifying hazards, preventative measures, safety protocols and PPE requirements. [7, 9]
- Identify ways of integrating sustainability into all phases of engineering project [4,9]
