Course Overview
This course covers the fundamentals of the British Columbia court system and of contract law, bidding, contractual linkages as they relate to the construction industry, and standard forms of Canadian construction contract documents, with emphasis on the “CCDC2 – Stipulated Price Contract”. The CCDC2 is discussed in detail with regard to the rights and responsibilities of those involved, risk allocation, construction insurance and bonds, and administrative procedures relating to payment, changes in the work, claims, disputes and dispute resolution. The information provided will benefit everyone involved in construction regardless of their perspective, and is essential for any career related to construction contracting.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe how our court system works.
- Apply the legal principles and vocabulary related to construction contracts.
- Identify the parties to a contract, and explain how they interact with one another within a contractual framework.
- Evaluate the rights, obligations and risks faced by Owners, Contractors and Consultants.
- Select and prepare the most appropriate form of contract for any type of building construction project.
- Develop the documents required both for a tender call and for the submission of a bid.
- Establish administrative procedures for shop drawing submissions, progress payments, change orders and project close-out.
- Identify, quantify and process changes to a contract.
- Reference legislation relating to building construction, e.g. Workers Compensation Act, Builders' Lien Act, Commercial Arbitration Act.
- Develop deficiency lists and take appropriate actions to resolve deficiencies.
