Course Overview
Students will get a comprehensive understanding of the wide range and types of communications existing in the maritime world. Strong emphasis is placed on developing the students’ abilities to produce written work that is accurate, brief, and clear. Barriers to proper communications will be identified. Students will do progressive in-class writing assignments and give an oral presentation to the class. They will also prepare for and attend a business meeting. Communications covered by regulatory and legal authorities will be reviewed and structure of CSA-2001, TC Publications, basic ISM programs, and required shipboard certificates will be taught to the students.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an accurate, brief, and clear writing style that does not contain confusing, ambiguous, redundant, extraneous wording, and improper syntax and grammar.
- Write technical definitions and descriptions using the techniques developed in Item 1.
- Logically organize key elements in memoranda and other documents including progress, inspection, and investigative reports.
- Write memoranda and other documents such as progress, investigative, and inspection reports, which have key elements organized logically, using key functions of word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Write investigative reports, business letters, and technical letters.
- Deliver an effective oral presentation using the elements for preparation and delivery.
- Deliver a professional, credible 10–15 minute presentation using audio-visual aids.
- Set an agenda and participate in a business meeting.
- Conduct on board inter-departmental communication, using correct protocols.
