Course Overview
The Communication Department Learning Centre is available to BCIT students who require assistance and guidance for both oral and written communication skills. Students can access the centre for instructor assistance and/or guidance on how to access and use the English language support learning materials available 24/7 on the "virtual learning centre" website. This course isn't currently offered. Please check back next term or contact the appropriate Program Assistant [PDF] to determine when this course will be offered again. The Communication Department Learning Centre course is not currently available. However, students can receive help with communication skills either through the Learning Commons (hyper link to www.bcit.ca/learningcommons/ ) or via COMM 0045 (hyper link to www.bcit.ca/study/courses/comm0045 ).

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the students will have had the opportunity to:
WRITE
- Organize, draft, revise, and edit a variety of text.
- Identify and correct major grammatical, structural and lexical errors; demonstrate control over sentence structure errors in own writing.
- Use a wide range of sentence patterns appropriately in written tasks.
- Use appropriate vocabulary to express message clearly.
READ
- Read and understand a wide variety of written materials of moderate length.
- Comprehend less familiar and/or technical terms using a range of decoding strategies and context clues.
- Adjust reading techniques according to the level of the material and the purpose of reading.
SPEAK
- Ask questions to clarify instructions; respond to questions appropriately.
- Demonstrate the use of appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication skills (e.g., turn-taking, eye contact, body language).
- Participate effectively in a variety of classroom activities.
LISTEN
- Understand discussions, instructions, and lectures at a normal rate of speech.
- Understand a variety of natural speech with a varied rate of delivery with some dependence on repetition.
