Course Overview
This course will build upon the introductory concepts presented in CESA 5320 - Energy Systems and Controls to provide students with information on how to create an optimized control system with more complex control strategies. From these learnings, the student will be able design an optimal control system creating a complete controls package such as a detailed points list, sequence of operation, alarm and trend schedules, and integration schedules. This package will cover content that can be used in a new construction project or retrofitting an existing system. Students will be able to identify a direct digital control (DDC) package that meets all the requirements of the specifications. Student will review detailed DDC submittals and create a deficiency list if required. Students will then theoretically work through the process of commissioning a new system or retro-commissioning an existing system during which the student will verify if the DDC systems meet all the requirements of the specifications and if it is commissioned properly.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply building codes and standards pertaining to building systems and operations.
- Apply continuous optimization principles to building systems and operation.
- Identify the Human Factors within daily operations of the clients and designing a system that limits human changes or errors within the system.
- Create a strategy to optimize an existing control system through expanding the system or using the points that are provided.
- Design a DDC controls system for a new installation that can be used in a specification or RFP package such as sequences of operations, requirements of a system, points list, alarm and trend schedules, electronic building documentation requirements, IT requirements and integration, and communication requirements.
- Decipher ways to create packages that can limit change orders within a project.
- Review a DDC controls package and shop drawing submittals.
- Create a deficiencies list from a reviewed controls package.
- Specify the various commissioning processes for new and existing building systems and the reports that need to be created.
- Identify what the responsibilities are of the commissioning agent and the DDC control provider or client.
- Select tools that are required for commissioning.
- Create a schedule for the commissioning process.
- Verify that the requirements have been met once installation has been completed.
- Create an Operator Training program that understands the importance of a successful training that provides the key elements for running a system, efficiently and effectively.
