Course Overview
This course will provide the necessary radiographic experiences for students to gain confidence in the Canadian hospital imaging environment. Opportunities will be given to apply patient care and demonstrate a high standard of professional behaviour. Students will be expected to demonstrate imaging skill competence on all types of patients in the following procedures: upper and lower extremities, vertebrae, skull, chest, abdomen and common contrast media studies. Students will practice imaging skills in acute patient care areas such as operating rooms, emergency and intensive care units. At the end of this course, in addition to demonstrating a high standard of professional behaviour, students will have demonstrated competent technologist skills, with the ability to meet the imaging requirements of any general imaging department.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Orient themselves to the radiographic area of the imaging department, including:
- Locating and explaining department protocols, documentation requirements, safety features, office procedures and department workflow.
- Participating in hospital orientation programs (if available).
- Prepare contrast medium for all fluoroscopic procedures.
- Provide patient care that will ensure the safety of patients, co-workers and others.
- Prepare the x-ray room for all radiographic procedures.
- Use radiographic/accessory equipment in a competent and efficient manner.
- Apply positioning and technical skills during basic examinations of the chest, abdomen, upper and lower extremities.
- Produce diagnostic images.
- Critique all images and apply corrections as needed.
- Judiciously use the material resources.
- Apply radiation protection practices.
- Communicate with the patient during all aspects of the imaging examination.
- Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills.
- Document all information pertinent to the radiographic procedures.
- Demonstrate professional behaviours and attitudes.
