Course Overview
This course covers fundamental aspects of engineering law and contracts. Topics include sources of law, aboriginal and indigenous law, business organizations, tendering and contract administration, intellectual property, environmental law, municipal permitting, and bylaws, and employment law.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and describe the roles and legal responsibilities of the key professional players in the design, tendering and contract administration of a construction project. [8, 11]
- Explain the various legal positions of an engineer working as an owner's representative. [8]
- Assess an engineer's responsibility and ethical stance in relation to construction and design conflicts. [8, 10]
- Interpret negligence scenarios and provide opinions on options for avoiding similar situations. [8, 10]
- Identify insurance issues related to the contracting industry and the engineering profession. [8, 11]
- Explain the differing roles of an engineer in negotiating engineering agreements and in providing contract administration services. [8, 11]
- Discuss alternative methods to litigation in the dispute resolution process for a construction contract. [8, 11]
