Course Overview
The course is intended to introduce the first year students to the discipline of chemical engineering technology and the principles upon which it is based. It also prepares students for second year courses which will revisit chemical and biochemical engineering technology in greater depth. It covers the whole field of chemical engineering at a very introductory level and teaches students how to analyze and solve engineering problems.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- List the areas in which the discipline of chemical engineering is practiced.
- Perform stoichiometric calculations involving combination of chemicals.
- Create basic process flowsheets using accepted symbols.
- Perform basic material and energy balances.
- Explain the underlying principles of unit operations.
- Explain the basic principles of fluid flow.
- Identify the mechanisms and significance of heat transfer and mass transfer.
- Distinguish between the various process control strategies; namely open loop, closed loop, feed forward and feedback.
