Course Overview
The purpose of this course is to learn all of the sonography imaging components of a complete routine echocardiogram study, including the assessment of heart structure and function. Students will build on the 2D imaging and technical skills learned in DSON 1012 and learn to assess cardiac structures/regions of interest using 2D, CDI, spectral Doppler, and basic quantification methods. Topics of this course include CDI, spectral Doppler, assessment, and quantification of the heart structure and function using the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) guidelines. Students will perform echo sonography hands-on skills on a lab partner with instructor guidance. Students are introduced to Inter-Professional Education (IPE) through shared activities with other BCIT SOHS students.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Question the patient to obtain relevant information regarding history and condition. (1.1f)
- Demonstrate proficiency/competence in setting up, monitoring, and analyzing a 3-lead ECG in the lab setting. (3.3f)
- Perform uncomplicated cardiac sonograms in a timely manner, including 2D assessment, m-mode, Doppler and measurements (when applicable) on the structures of interest described in NCP 6.1 Appendix E. Note: structures of interest include ventricles, atria, heart valves, wall segments, septa, coronary vessels, hepatic veins, outflow tracts, great vessels, and extra-cardiac structures such as pleural or abdominal spaces. (3.1h, Appendix E).
- Ensure all applicable components of the examination are complete. (5.3l)
- Communicate departmental reporting procedures to the patient. (1.1g)
- Identify and respond to exceptions from established protocols and procedures. (2.2g)
- Identify and prioritize differential findings. (5.4e)
- Formulate and communicate an accurate technical impression based on patient history and sonographic findings.
- Recognize and document equipment and technical limitations. (5.3m, 5.3n, 5.4f)
- Assess the following structures with 2D, M-mode, colour Doppler, PW and CW Doppler, tissue Doppler, and measure off of 2D, PW, CW and Tissue Doppler images (when applicable): cardiac position, chest and thorax, coronary vessels, hepatic veins, outflow tracts, pulmonary veins, wall layers and segments, all 4 cardiac chambers and appendages, IAS, IVS, great vessels and their branches, all cardiac valves, aortic root, MV/TV annulus, IVC and SVC. (Appendix E)
