Course details
A comprehensive course on cardiac catheterization principles representing the essentials necessary for a practicing cardiovascular technologist. Examines concepts of diagnostic cardiac catheterization with specific orientation to cardiac angiography, hemodynamics, calculations of cardiac values, and general lab practices. Also presents aspects of congenital cardiac catheterization,and other diagnostic modalities such as IVUS and FFR. Complications and common medications in the lab are also highlighted.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the equipment and supplies required for diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations.
- Explain the indications and the contraindications for a cardiac catheterization and the possible outcomes of an emergency catheterization.
- Define the role of the scrub assistant, circulator, monitoring technology, and radiology technologist.
- Differentiate between various catheterization approaches.
- Identify normal and abnormal cardiac indices, pressures, and saturations in the cardiopulmonary system.
- Perform calculations on recorded data in order to establish the diagnosis of specific abnormal pathophysiologies.
- Differentiate between normal and abnormal cardiopulmonary anatomy obtained from angiograms.
- Describe other related cardiac examinations that are routinely performed.
