Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to use CAD software to:

  • Optimize design alternatives and determine the best design option by comparing measurable design parameters such as strength and weight.
  • Perform stress-strain analysis of machine elements under loads and interpret the results using FEA software embedded in CAD software.
  • Apply a wide variety of static and dynamic loads to accurately evaluate the design performance under stress, strain and displacement and predict the failure.
  • Implement tolerance analysis/stack-up seamlessly to determine if the design meets fit and function requirements.
  • Simulate mechanical mechanisms and output the graphical and numerical data of important kinematic parameters such as positions, velocities, and accelerations.
  • Determine the size of the actuators required for mechanical mechanisms under static or dynamic loads.
  • Analyse and study the interaction of assembly components to check for possible colliding parts before incurring the cost of manufacturing.

Effective as of Fall 2009
