Course Overview
This course examines building enclosure systems for mass timber construction, beginning with foundational building science related to the movement of heat, air, and moisture through building assemblies. Students will study enclosure control layers and the properties and installation of common materials used to protect structures from environmental exposure and enhance energy performance. The course applies these principles to mass timber buildings, focusing on enclosure system selection, detailing, and installation sequencing. Common enclosure configurations and best practices are reviewed, along with the advantages and limitations of enclosure systems in relation to primary structural systems. Students will focus on moisture management including, the identification of construction-phase risks and the development of a moisture management plan for mass timber projects.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and locate control layers within wall assembly
- Understand how solid wood reacts to environmental conditions, specifically moisture
- Identify the steps for installing detail components including seals and closures for air and water control/continuity
- Identify common enclosure structure materials and methods used on mass timber buildings
- Describe site installation methods for common enclosure materials
- Develop a high-level moisture management strategy for on-site during construction
- List the benefits and drawbacks of common prefabricated enclosure systems from engineered/curtainwood façade to conventional enclosures
Effective as of Winter 2026
