Course Overview
An introductory course on employee benefits planning and administration from a total compensation perspective. A review of various benefit plans including health, disability, insurance, retirement, paid time off and work schedule benefits. An exploration of new developments in the field of employee benefits, specifically emerging benefit plans, and contemporary issues such as flexible benefits plans, demographic changes, part-time workers and legislative initiatives.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will:
- Appreciate the strategic influence of benefits plan design on organizations.
- Understand the role of the compensation/benefits specialist within the human resources function and the contribution that he/she is expected to make towards organizational effectiveness.
- Recognize the need for a total compensation perspective when costing employee benefits.
- Be able to determine the cost of specific employee benefit plans.
- Understand the process and considerations involved in designing employee benefit plans.
- Be able to assess benefit plans from both employer and employee perspectives.
- Appreciate the rapidly changing field of employee benefits and the role of the employee benefits specialist as a change agent.
