Course Overview
This introductory course on Safety Management Systems (SMS) provides essential information for persons working in an aviation environment. Students will learn the evolution of safety management in aviation and how to apply a systematic approach to safety. Evaluation includes news watch, a case study and examinations.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe a systematic approach to safety management in aviation.
- Outline the evolution of safety management in aviation.
- Outline each of the Safety Management System components.
- Identify roles and responsibilities within a Safety Management System.
- Describe an individual employee's role in a Safety Management System.
- Explain human factors in an aviation environment.
- Analyze human factors and their application in Safety Management Systems.
- Explain how to meet the Transport Canada requirements for initial human factors training as specified in CARS 573.10(1)(s).
- Identify important aspects of a 'good' safety culture.
