Course Overview
The course provides the basic principles; binders & resins, pigments, solvents, additives, testing & measuring, paint and coating types & terminology. Basic safety including personal protective equipment, storage and handling, spontaneous combustion, accidental spills, fire safety, electrical safety, compressed air hazards and WHIMIS will also be covered.

Learning Outcomes
To provide students with enough information and skills to:
- Work safely with a variety of preparation and finishing materials and to choose and use personal protective equipment.
To provide knowledge and information that will allow the student to understand the basic principles of paint and coating materials. This includes the type of components in coatings as well as how they dry and cure and how they are tested for quality control as well as physical testing during application and after.
Safety and Basic Coating technology are pre-requisites for Level Two: Manual Spray Finishing, and Level Three: Wood Finishing.
