Course Overview
This hands-on course introduces the fundamental concepts of planning IT solutions for deployment on cloud service providers. Participants must have prior technical knowledge creating software applications using programming languages or scripting in Node.js, or Java, or .NET. COMP 3215 is supported by AWS Academy and is delivered by an AWS Academy Accredited Educator. Students will be shown how to access to limited AWS resources through a registration process. They will use a scenario-based lab environments for evaluating trade-offs in different approaches to design reliable, secure, high-performing, cost-efficient systems leveraging the AWS Cloud. Labs and exercises leverage infrastructure-as-code techniques to automate the build of a solution based on their chosen scenario. Alternative services available through other cloud service providers or open-source solutions are introduced for comparison with the AWS Cloud services used in the course. Upon successful completion, students will have gained experience designing scalable and secure distributed systems on the AWS Cloud. They will also be prepared to challenge the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate certification exam, available at additional cost through Amazon. COMP 3215 is an elective in several BCIT Computing Flexible Learning/PTS programs, including the CST FLEX Diploma. This course is offered once per year in January (Winter) term.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe Cloud Computing.
- Design highly available, cost-efficient, fault-tolerant, and scalable distributed systems on AWS.
- Use AWS foundational, deployment, and management services.
- Design identity and access management system to secure organizational accounts.
- Identify and define technical requirements for an AWS-based application.
- Prepare a business plan for implementation of AWS cloud architecture solutions.
- Utilize best practices for building secure and reliable applications on the AWS platform.
- Implement the basic architectural principles of building on the AWS cloud.
- Evaluate logging and monitoring services for AWS applications and data access.
- Implement automated services to enable greater flexibility and resiliency in an infrastructure.
- Utilize advanced cloud security features and tools that AWS provides.
- Evaluate and consider trade-offs in different implementations for how they impact business objectives.
- Prepare to challenge the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate certification exam available through Amazon (for an additional cost).

- Please email cstflex@bcit.ca for Departmental approval. Include your Student number (A0#) and COMP__ and preferred CRN __ and Program Declaration____. Course is 36 hours synchronous online classes. Please Note: Attendance, participation in class and the BCIT Learning Hub are mandatory. You should prepare to spend 2-3 hours on homework for every 1 hour of class time. This course may require an average total time commitment of 9-12+ hours per week. 3 hours of synchronous class time and 6-9+ hours per week for homework. Late registration is not permitted. BCIT Computing is primarily a Microsoft Windows environment. Students must provide their own current model Windows-compatible PC with microphone and video camera. i5 or higher equivalent processor, with 8 GB of RAM minimum, and 256 GB minimum storage. Highspeed internet access is needed for online sections and for homework. Mac users must have the ability to manage and support their iOS computer. They may need to create a virtual Windows environment using Parallels or VMWare Fusion. COMP instructors may not be able to assist Mac users with software compatibility issues. BCIT does not provide access to Parallels or support for students to use a Mac to run Windows.
