Course Overview
The course covers basic safety concepts in the following: the application of the Workers Compensation Act, general safety practices for trade areas, basic body mechanics for lifting and moving objects, identification of the three classes of fires and types of extinguishers, and the identification of hazardous materials. As well this course identifies some trade specific safety practices as they relate to the Refrigeration field.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Describe the Worker's Compensation Board (WCB) workplace responsibilities of the employee and the employer.
- Define terms used in the WCB Act.
- Identify the WCB rules and regulations that apply to the piping and refrigeration trades.
- Define WHMIS.
- Describe employer and employee obligations as they relate to WHMIS.
- Describe correct safety procedures for hand and power tools.
- Describe shop safety equipment and lockout procedures.
- Identify the classes of fires and the ways in which to extinguish them.
- Identify the WCB regulations applicable to the handling and storing of hazardous material.
- Describe the safety precautions to be observed when handling moving and storing hazardous material.
- Be prepared to obtain Certification for Power Actuated Tools.
