Course Overview
This is the first course in a series of three courses that collectively support the completion of an applied capstone project. Across the three courses, students will learn fundamental project management concepts and skills, practice developing project management tools and documents, develop a project management plan for a project completed with an industry partner, execute the project, and evaluate and report on project outcomes. Throughout the series, students will also develop teamwork skills and the ability to engage in structured self-reflection. In this initial course, students are introduced to foundational project management concepts and tools. Students practice creating the key project management planning tools and governance documents used to define and plan a project. Core topics include stakeholder management, project communications, scope planning, schedule planning, and budget planning. Planning tools include the work breakdown structure (WBS), activity list, network diagram, and Gantt chart. Governance documents include the project charter and the project management plan. Evaluation includes activities, assignments, and exams.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe fundamental project management concepts, including project characteristics, constraints, roles, life cycles, and development approaches.
- Apply foundational stakeholder and communication planning techniques to identify stakeholders and develop a basic project communication plan.
- Develop a project charter for a simulated project.
- Create key project planning tools used in scope, schedule, and budget planning, including a work breakdown structure (WBS), WBS dictionary, activity list, network diagram, and Gantt chart.
- Demonstrate awareness of best practices for effective teamwork in a project environment.
- Reflect on individual and team dynamics to support personal and professional development.
