Course Overview
This course consists of sessions in applied basic mathematics; students are expected to complete math assignments in the following areas: whole numbers, fractions, decimals, measurements, ratios, conversions, percentage, exponents, equations, perimeter, area, volume and geometry. Students are required to complete hands-on applied math sessions as well as self-paced assignments and tests.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Solve word problems involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers and decimals
- Add and subtract fractions
- Multiply and divide fractions
- Solve word problems involving fractions
- Apply key terms and concepts, including reading and writing decimals, rounding numbers, working with repeating decimals
- Convert within the metric system
- Convert units of length, mass, capacity and temperature between the metric and imperial systems
- Write numbers and express rates as ratios
- Write proportions and use them to find an unknown quantity
- Solve word problems using ratio and proportion
- Solve percent problems by using ratio and proportion
- Convert between fractions, decimals and percentages
- Solve word problems involving percentages
- Solve problems involving positive and negative values
- Apply key terms involving powers and roots
- Square and cube whole numbers, fractions and decimals
- Find roots of whole numbers, fractions and decimals
- Use a calculator to solve powers and roots
- Identify line, bar and circle graphs
- Solve problems following the “order of operations” sequence
- Solve simple equations
