Course Overview
This course builds on material from SRMT 3700 Applied Forest Measurement: reinforcing and applying the essential measurement skills and principles for the valuation of standing timber. The course advances student skills as they practice and apply measurement and assessment procedures of the Provincial Vegetation resources Inventory (VRI), Call Grading and Net Factoring and Appraisal Cruising systems. An overview of the provincial wood products manufacturing processes and markets will also be introduced. The course reinforces the sampling and measurement principles and skills required of the technologist to practice in the professionally regulated revenue risk B.C appraisal system.

- Call grade and net factor standing timber to the 'sort' level using a rule based, variable length process.
- Calculate net factors for variable log lengths in standing timber with varioius defects.
- Estimate, through reconnaisance, standing timber volume and value by 'sort' definition.
- Propose optimum bucking lengths on individual trees to maximize value.
- Plan and establish a provincial cutting permit cruise to meet provincial requirements.
- Interpret standard cruise compilation output.
- Derive an average selling price from cruise data, utilize prepared operating costs and determine indicated stumpage for coastal scale-based cutting permits.
- Plan and establish an inventory based on predetermined criteria.
- Use mid-scale air photos to delineate a forested area into similar vegetated polygons.
- Interpret mid-scale photos to estimate polygon species, volume, and site index.
