Course Overview
This course covers the theory and practice of ambient, indoor and source emission testing, as well as sampling techniques and devices nowadays utilized in industry to determine gases, odours, vapours and particulates. The course also covers the theory of operation of direct reading instruments such as photo-ionization and non-dispersive infrared detectors, chemical and catalytic sensors, and odour samplers. Principles of gas collection using passive and active sorbent samplers are explained and demonstrated. The isokinetic sampling, gas flow measurements, determination of gas composition and molecular weight, moisture determination methods, and sampling train components are explained for particulate emission testing. Laboratory sessions cover calibration of instruments, sampling plan development and practical application of instrumentation (sampling/testing) in accordance with standard sampling and testing methods and regulations.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Discuss the theory and principles of operation of various instruments and sampling media used for collection and determination of gases, vapours and particulates in the air.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of sensory techniques as well as the applications and limitations of odour sampling.
- Assess factors in the selection of sampling/testing devices and methods.
- Develop appropriate sampling plans for given sampling events.
- Calibrate instrumentation and prepare sampling media for field sampling/testing.
- Apply US EPA Method 5 for particulates including: source testing calculations, traverse points, determination of stack gas velocity, gas composition, moisture content and particulate emissions.
- Discuss the implications of sources of errors in sampling procedures.
- Perform air quality sampling and testing following the standard procedures.
- Prepare written reports with numerical and graphical representation of results, discussion, conclusions and recommendations.
