Course Overview
This course is designed to provide learners with the air modelling underlying science of atmospherics physics as well as with the hands-on skills to successfully run selected regulatory air dispersion models. Lecture material covers principles of atmospheric physics with emphasis on the Planetary Boundary Layer. The course will cover model input parameters such as: source(s) emissions and characteristics, meteorological parameters and terrain classes. In addition, Canadian modelling regulatory requirements and applicable air dispersion models will be discussed. Computer laboratory sessions involve case studies using screening tools such as SCREEN, and sophisticated model software such as AERMOD and CALPUFF.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Interpret atmospheric processes pertained to the dispersion of pollutants.
- Prepare input parameters for different modelling systems using meteorological surface and upper air databases, emission parameters calculations and receptor location.
- Apply mathematical formulations used to characterize the atmospheric processes, data processors and accessory programs for producing statistical and graphical model outputs.
- Compare screening techniques and refined air quality models with respect to the complexity of input and output parameters, and pollutant concentrations.
- Discuss the modeling utility in determining regulatory requirements and source compliance with air quality standards and objectives.
- Carry out air dispersion modeling using application software for SCREEN, AERMOD, CALPUFF.
