Compares the operations and capabilities of different types of crushing plants: jaw crushers, roll crushers, cone crushers, impact crushers, tandem crushing units. Topics include screening capacities; calculated output; the ability of production systems to meet aggregate requirements; quality control inspection procedures; methods of correcting gradation defects resulting from production/stockpiling; the need for safety in all aspects of production.

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Module 1 - Crushing and Reduction Equipment
- Discuss the purpose of crushing aggregates.
- Discuss the functions and categories of crushers and the stages in the crushing process.
- Identify the five types of crushers and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each.
- Determine the production rates of various crushers and select the appropriate equipment given the job requirements.
Module 2 - Screening Equipment
- Describe the purpose for the screening plant.
- Recommend the screen sizes required for various aggregate products.
- Describe the various types of screen assemblies and screen meshes.
- Describe the washing and sorting of aggregates through the use of screen decks.
- Calculate the capacities of each deck given the initial feed rate and the details of the screening deck.
- Determine the sizes of screen deck assemblies and the required screens for production of given material size requirements.
Module 3 - Washing and Classifying Equipment
- Describe the procedures used to wash and sort fine aggregates and discuss the operation of each equipment type.
- Explain the process by which a sand classifier produces sand to project specifications.
- Compare types of washing and classification equipment and recommend the appropriate equipment for job specifications.
Module 4 - Ancillary Handling Equipment
- Discuss the types and purposes of the various aggregate feeder systems.
- Define the components of conveyor systems and discuss the operation and adjustment of these systems.
- Identify the components of a conveyor scale system and discuss the requirements for scale calibration.
- Identify and explain the use of stakers and surge systems in the transfer and storage of aggregates.
Module 5 - Stockpiling Aggregates
- Explain three methods of stockpiling aggregates.
- Recognize the potential dangers of stockpile segregation and recommend procedures to eliminate these dangers.
- Compute stockpile quantities given the appropriate data.
Module 6 - Development of Aggregate Resources
- State and discuss the steps taken for aggregate source investigation.
- Analyze a gravel prospect report and make recommendations on the method and type of processing equipment required to meet project aggregate specifications.
- State and describe the steps required in source development and the factors to be considered in the phases of establishing an aggregate source.
- Recommend the selection of processing methods for the aggregate based on the characteristics of the deposit.
Module 7 - Quality Control
- Identify and define the role of an inspector and the various inspector/producer relationships.
- State and define the role of the inspector in aggregate production.
- Employ standard sampling procedures as they apply to aggregate production.
- Identify the key areas of the aggregate process plant where sampling should take place.
- Record the daily production data on standard recording forms.
- Describe the general procedures for standard aggregate tests.
Module 8 - Introduction to Economics
- State and define the basic elements and types of contracts relative to aggregates.
- State and define the basic types of estimates.
- Identify the components of a bid price calculation and discuss the relationship of each to the bid.
