Course details

Provides students with knowledge and ability to properly perform, record, and report the results of basic field and laboratory procedures for aggregates. The course includes hands on testing and practical knowledge application of the AASHTO/ASTM standards such as description, sampling aggregates, reducing samples of aggregate to testing size, etc.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand concepts of Standard Test Methods for testing of aggregates.
  • Develop a working knowledge for testing of aggregates.
  • Perform Standard Test Methods for testing of aggregates.

Test methods and specific learning objectives include:

  • Sampling of Aggregates
    • Understand distinction between "maximum" and "nominal maximum" aggregate sizes
    • Understand sampling requirements
  • Reducing Samples of Aggregate to Testing Size
    • Know requirements for reducing fine aggregates
    • Know reducing requirements for coarse aggregate
    • Know and perform the procedure for introducing sample to splitter
    • Know and perform procedure for quartering sample
    • Know and perform procedure for miniature stockpile samples
  • Materials Finer than 75-μm (No. 200) Sieve by Washing
    • Know proper apparatus and materials
    • Know the sample size requirements for different aggregate sizes
    • Know and perform procedure for washing
    • Know and perform calculation for amount of material passing 75-μm sieve by washing
  • Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates
    • Know sieving requirements for mechanical sieve shakers
    • Know that size of field sample shall be at least four times required test sample
    • Know how to determine size of test samples for fine and coarse aggregates
    • Know the procedure for hand sieving and the requirements for sufficiency of hand sieving
    • Know the calculations, percent passing, etc., to nearest 0.1%
    • Know the requirements for calculating fineness modulus
  • Specific Gravity and Absorption of Coarse Aggregate
    • Know definition of terms for specific gravity
    • Know requirements and procedure for sample preparation
    • Know the sequence of operations for the test procedure
    • Calculate relative density, Density OD, Density SSD and apparent density and absorption
  • Specific Gravity and Absorption of Fine Aggregate
    • Know the difference between dry, moist, SSD and free water on aggregates
    • Know types of pycnometer that can be used
    • Understand alternative procedure for sample preparation
    • Calculate bulk specific gravity (relative density), SSD, & (apparent density)
    • Calculate absorption
  • Moisture Content of Aggregate by Drying
    • Understand scope of test method
    • Understand detrimental effects of rapidly heating the sample
    • Know when sample is thoroughly dry
    • Calculate total evaporable moisture content
    • Know surface moisture content
  • Organic Impurities in Fine Aggregates for Concrete
    • Understand significance and use of test method
    • Understand results of the test method
    • Understand method used for standard color solution procedure
    • Know proper procedure for interpreting results
