Course Overview
This course provides students with a knowledge and understanding of ship's business. Topics covered include: Marine Insurance Act, charters, STCW and ISM Codes, pollution, and crew training and representation. A broad overview of project management including purchasing, contracting, and accounting methods will also be covered.
Prerequisite(s)
- Transport Canada, STCW Fourth-Class Motor Marine Engineering Certificate of Competency, and a minimum of two months of sea time as engineer officer of the watch.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Interpret and apply the Marine Insurance Act
- Interpret and apply time, voyage, and demise charter parties.
- Interpret and apply the Hague Visby and York Antwerp rules.
- Interpret and apply the STCW Code, A VIII – Watchkeeping for Engineers.
- Interpret and apply the Pollution Protection Regulations.
- Interpret and apply the International Safety Management Code.
- Interpret and apply the Marine Personnel Regulations, Part 2 – Crewing.
- Interpret and apply the Marine Personnel Regulations, Part 3 – Labor (crew training, representation, and log books).
- Given a real-world scenario, create a ship maintenance budget and manage it to ensure effective maintenance is carried out.
