Course Overview
This course integrates relational anatomy, cross sectional anatomy and physiology with sonographic principles in the imaging of the normal abdomen and male pelvis. Common pathologies or anatomic variants are introduced. Theory taught in this course will be integrated with laboratory experience in DSON 1011 through both live and simulated practice.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Given an image, recognize normal anatomy in 2D assessment, colour/power Doppler, and measure on 2D (when applicable) the following structures: abdominal wall, aorta and tributaries, biliary tract, inferior vena cava, liver, liver vessels, male pelvis, pancreas, kidneys, and urinary tract, renal vasculature and spleen.
- Given an image, describe probe movements and sonographic anatomical relationships in the abdomen and male pelvis.
- Given an image, evaluate orientation, identification, labelling, image artefacts, and quality.
- Given an image, identify appropriate technical adjustments required to improve image quality.
- Apply industry standards to measure structures in the abdominal cavity and male pelvis, including length and volumetric calculations.
- Given an image, differentiate normal findings from anatomic variants, artefacts, or patient limitations.
- Given an image, correlate changes in the adult abdominopelvic organs or structures with patient age, size, and disease process
- Given an image, correlate laboratory tests, exam appropriateness, contraindications, clinical symptoms, and patient history with sonographic findings and clinical presentations.
- Monitor output display indices and adjust power output in accordance with the "as low as reasonably achievable" (ALARA) principle. (4.2c)
- Assess the peritoneal, retroperitoneal cavities/spaces, chest, and thorax with real-time 2D assessment. (Appendix B)
Effective as of Fall 2024
