Course Overview
Develop core skills for effective communication and interpersonal interactions for Medical Laboratory Technologists within the health care team, including concepts such as communication skills, establishing and maintaining a relationship with clients and others, caring, empathy, and courtesy. Uses an experiential and self-reflective approach to develop self-awareness, an increased understanding of self, and how one's own interpersonal style affects others. Respecting and responding sensitively to individuals with cultural or other intersectional diversity is emphasized. Teamwork exercises and learning activities include discussions, role-play, and case study analysis. Learning is assessed through a mix of theoretical exams, skills demonstrations and presentations.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain inter-professional collaborative practices with regard to role clarification, communication, and collaboration.
- Explain aspects of defensiveness and identify approaches to minimizing this.
- Demonstrate effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication strategies.
- Manifest and convey empathy in working with patients and colleagues in a health care setting (e.g., become aware of nonverbal communication skills, active listening, assertiveness training)
- Describe the nature of interpersonal conflicts.
- Create possible ways to resolve conflict leading to win-win situations.
- Apply effective teamwork skills.
- Discuss cultural differences and use approaches to increase understanding and respect between persons of different cultures in clinical situations.
- Illustrate approaches to working effectively with patients where language barriers are present.
- Define confidentiality of healthcare information and understands the importance of informed consent prior to performing a procedure and respecting a patient's right to refuse
