Course Overview
This Patient Care course is designed for internationally educated medical radiography students to help them acquire the knowledge and skills required to provide patient care in Radiology departments. In-class assignments and supervised laboratory activities are designed to give students opportunities to apply their critical thinking and manual skills to a variety of patient care situations. The scheduling of content and classes is designed to complement the theory and skills required by the students in classes and during practicum experiences.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Communicate significant data to other health care personnel.
- Assess patients and collect relevant patient information prior to performing diagnostic procedures.
- Maintain safety and comfort for the patient, colleagues and self when:
- Using stretchers and wheelchairs.
- Moving, positioning, lifting and transferring patients.
- Working with patients who have tubes inserted and/or are attached to specialized equipment.
- Use Standard Precautions (routine precautions/BSP/medical asepsis) and isolation protocols appropriately when:
- Setting up a sterile field.
- Applying a sterile dressing.
- Carrying out a surgical scrub.
- Donning a sterile gown and gloves.
- Explain the required interventions when working with:
- Patients experiencing pain, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, vertigo and syncope.
- Patients who have a physical disability related to a cerebral vascular accident, arthritis, a hearing impairment, or impaired vision.
- A hospitalized patient who experiences a cardiac arrest.
- A patient who is in shock, is haemorrhaging, and/or who experiences a myocardial infarction, a seizure, or a diabetic reaction.
