This course will provide students with an introduction to British Columbia's forest industry including a historical perspective, forest policy, forestry operations, silviculture, ecology, forest protection, forest inventory, management of renewable resources, and global markets.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Discuss the historical development of BC's forest industry.
- Describe the significance of BC's forest industry to the provincial economy and resource-based communities.
- Describe the fundamentals of BC forestry as a business: the structure and size of the industry, its ownership, and certification/quality assurance systems.
- Explain BC's current forest tenure system, principles of strategic land use planning, operational forest planning, and regulatory compliance.
- Describe the components of a forest ecosystem with emphasis on those that directly affect ecosystem health.
- Describe the cycle of getting logs from the forest to markets including planning, inventory, harvesting, roads, transportation, reforestation, and crop tending.
- Identify common species trees of British Colombia based on leaves, bark, and crown closure.
- Discuss current forest management practices to help reduce the damage to BC's forests such as fire, insects, and disease.
