Course Overview
The first of three courses to introduce the field of asphalt technology including the basic properties of asphalt cements, liquid asphalts and aggregates. This is an entry level course but students are advised to complete TSYH 3220 as a prerequisite.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Module 1 - Introduction to Asphalt
- Define terms relating to asphalt and its uses.
- Generally describe the design considerations.
- Describe the pavement materials and types of construction.
- Outline the concepts of rehabilitation and maintenance.
Module 2 - Petroleum Asphalt - Refining and Properties
- Outline the refining process and state the desired properties of asphalt cement.
- Describe the purpose, preparation, specification and testing of emulsified and cutback asphalts.
- Describe air-blown asphalts, their properties and specifications.
- Describe the selection of asphalt types and grades for different types of asphalt construction.
- Describe proper sampling techniques and temperature/volume relationships of asphalt.
Module 3 - Mineral Aggregates - Sources and Evaluation
- State the origin, sources and evaluation of aggregates.
- Outline the methods of aggregate production.
- Explain gradation analysis, specific gravity and surface area calculations for aggregates.
- Explain how aggregates are proportioned to obtain desired gradations.
Module 4 - Standard Material Specifications
- Summarize the general specifications for asphalt cement and liquid asphalts.
- State the general grading specifications for mineral aggregates.
- Refer to and identify BC Ministry of Highways specifications for asphalt materials and mineral aggregates.
Module 5 - Superpave - Binder Specification and Testing
- Describe asphalt behaviour with temperature.
- Explain the basis for the Superpave binder specification, and contrast it with current specifications.
- Generally describe the Superpave binder tests and equipment.
- Generally outline the pavement performance factors addressed in Superpave.
- Select the Superpave specification (grade) for a given site, given the air temperature data and traffic loading.
Module 6 - Superpave Mineral Aggregates
- Describe aggregate behavior in pavements
- Explain the aggregate properties specified in Superpave
- Outline the basis for aggregate gradation in Superpave; and plot the specification and test data for gradation.
- Describe the aggregate selection in Superpave.
