Course Overview
Provides opportunities to apply and integrate nursing knowledge when providing nursing care for critically ill patients experiencing common health problems such as angina, MI, cardiac failure, and respiratory insufficiency. Provides opportunities to develop comprehensive assessment abilities, monitoring skills, and clinical decision- making. Using a partnership approach, enables learners to seek to understand the patient's experience of critical illness, to promote comfort, and to facilitate healing. Post conferences explore health promotion and the influence of the critical care environment in patient care. Includes laboratory experiences focusing on airway management, care of the patient with a central line and cardiac arrest management.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Analyze data collected through a complete comprehensive assessment. This includes interviewing, communication, physical assessment and use of monitoring devices and procedures.
- Articulate assessment findings in a comprehensive and systematic manner.
- Select nursing care measures for a critically ill patient based on the analysis of the data.
- Implement nursing care measures that promote comfort and healing based on the analysis of data from assessments and common understandings with patients.
- Perform nursing care in a manner that acknowledges and encourages collaboration with the patient, family and other health care providers.
- Adjust nursing care for critically ill patients to adapt for contextual influences in the critical care environment that impact the health of the patient and the provision of patient care.
- Perform competent nursing care with patients experiencing alterations in oxygen supply/demand (e.g., MI, angina, CHF and respiratory insufficiency).
Learning Intentions
Through participation in this course, the learner will have the opportunity to:
- Develop competence as a critical care nurse by applying the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to care for patients experiencing common critical illnesses.
- Apply reflective critical thinking to understand the influence -knowing the patient' has on the application of nursing knowledge and clinical decision making that promote comfort and foster healing.
- Use a variety of sources of data and a spirit of inquiry to pose and answer nursing practice questions.
- Use personal knowledge of the critical care environment and theories related to organizational structure and culture to consider the relationship between the environment and healing, as well as the nurse's role in humanizing the environment.
- Develop the ability to document and verbally present assessment findings, patient and nursing concerns in a systematic and comprehensive manner. Develop communication skills to engage in dialogue with patients and their family members.
- Initiate partnerships with patients, family members, colleagues and health care providers, and apply collaborative decision-making processes to mutually establish goals directed towards the patient's health and growth.
- Develop a personal understanding of professionalism and caring in critical care nursing practice.
