Course Overview
This course introduces the student to the clinical environment through online delivery of theory and visual presentation. The topics include essential elements of the general imaging department such as workflow, patient and departmental documentation, the role of technologists in the workplace and their relationship with patients and other healthcare members. This includes acceptable behavior and professionalism in the Imaging department. The student will become familiar with hospital/department administrative levels, respectful workplace, workplace safety regulations, incident/abuse reporting procedures, and medical information documentation requirements. Students will also develop introductory preceptorship skills to prepare for ongoing learning in the clinical area. Students will be prepared for their first clinical experience through an understanding of radiation protection procedures and regulations concerning all members of the workplace. The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) will be covered in detail. This course will be delivered in a blended manner utilizing online and face-to-face resources and instruction.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Describe the roles of the CAMRT and join the professional association.
- Describe the CAMRT Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
- Describe the requirements of patient confidentiality.
- Define patient informed consent, negligence of care, patient right to privacy, and mental disorder and the law (FIPPA, PIPA).
- Describe acceptable workplace behaviours and professional department.
- Explain best practices for providing guidance to students in the medical radiation technology workplace.
- Explain hospital response procedures for emergency patient situations.
- Describe clinical practicum site selection, Portfolio requirements and evaluation criteria.
- Describe the workflow of a general Imaging department and differentiate between information systems.
- Identify the essential elements of a patient requisition for radiographic examination.
- Perform and record a patient history.
- Interpret patient documentation.
- Describe WHMIS, the main principles of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations, and describe reporting mechanism for workplace incidents and Work-safe.
- Describe radiation safety standards and safety measures required for patients and workplace members.
- Apply the CAMRT competencies to course curriculum.
