Course Overview
Integrating concepts from psychology, sociology, and interpersonal relations, this course is designed to help learners respectfully address the psychosocial needs of patients, and collaborate successfully with other members of the health care team. Empathy and interpersonal communications skills are emphasized; as these provide the basis for crucial employability skills, such as managing stress in both self and patients, reducing the frequency and intensity of conflict, and working respectfully with those from other cultures. Responsible, professional and ethical conduct is underscored.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion the student will be able to:
- Integrate effective interpersonal communication skills in order to foster rapport and trust.
- Apply concept of empathy to create respectful, supportive, and compassionate relations with patients and co-workers.
- Recognize and adapt communication based on the individual needs and nonverbal communication of patients and colleagues.
- Use active listening skills to obtain information from patients and/or support persons.
- Perform various types of assertion according to appropriateness and desired result.
- Implement psychological strategies and skills to prevent distress and uncooperative behavior in patients.
- Given a scenario, develop strategies to deal with harassment and discrimination in the workplace.
- Develop strategies for giving and receiving feedback that emphasize accountability, respect, and professional growth
- Identify types of conflict in the workplace and employ appropriate conflict management techniques to maintain a professional work environment.
- Develop strategies to work with cultural and developmental differences that impact interactions and treatment in a clinical setting.
- Demonstrate empathy and sensitivity to the diversity of individuals
- Identify indicators of abuse and respond within ethical and legal guidelines.
- Explain the impact of stress and factors that generate or increase stress.
- Implement strategies to prevent and reduce distress in both self and patients.
- Describe stress-related disorders and appropriate treatments and interventions.
- Develop an individualized plan to cope with stress, burnout, grief, and loss in the healthcare environment.
