Course Overview
Focuses on the experience of anesthesia for individuals undergoing common, less complex surgery. Examines perioperative patient assessment and factors impacting the stability and safety of individuals from different age groups who are undergoing anesthesia. Explores the role and practice of the circulating nurse.

Learning Outcomes
Through participation in this course, the learner will have the opportunity to:
- Broaden your understanding of the meaning individuals and their family members make of the experience of anaesthesia and common, less complex surgery.
- Develop an understanding of the circulating nurse's role (ways of knowing, being and doing) in caring for individuals experiencing common, less complex surgery and anaesthesia.
- Critically reflect on and analyze the circulating nurse's ways of knowing, being and doing.
- Reflect on collaboration with individuals and family members, colleagues and other health care providers to discover ways to build perioperative partnerships and establish shared meaning.
- Further develop communication skills by exploring communication processes that foster the development of nurse-patient relationships in diverse perioperative settings and situations.
- Explore aspects of professionalism and caring (compassion, conscience and commitment) as they relate to perioperative nursing practice, the role of the circulating nurse and patient stability.
- Use a variety of sources of knowledge to understand individuals' health challenges and threats to stability related to common, less complex surgery and anaesthesia.
- Develop a spirit of inquiry by examining a variety of sources of knowledge related to the role of the circulating nurse and the individual's preoperative experience.
