Course Overview
This course provides an introduction to excavation and earthmoving defined in terms of equipment used, specifications that govern, methods of operation and determination of production rates. Soil types, classifications and construction characteristics are introduced for the purpose of selecting equipment. Additionally, the course provides an introduction to the terminology and practices as related to culvert and drainage installation for highway projects.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Define and discuss the operation of excavation in a highway construction project including the equipment used, methods of operation, and interpretation of specifications.
- Identify and discuss the general earth, soil and rock types, classifications systems and construction characteristics as related to highway earth and rock excavations.
- Describe the operation of earthmoving and earth spreading by bulldozer, truck, grader and scraper in a highway construction project including the equipment used, methods of operation.
- Describe the importance of providing good drainage and describe the various types of culverts.
- Describe the proper methods used in locating and installing culvert, sub-drainage and storm sewer systems, describe the environmental effects of these systems and make recommendations for the installation and maintenance of culverts and drainage systems.
