Course Overview
The Clinical Workplace course expands the knowledge base of the student's clinical skills and theory required for today's diverse clinical setting. This course includes medical terminology, hospital emergency procedures and RIS and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS), professional ethics and practice, and other important issues encompassed in the clinical environment of the BC Health care system. This course is intended to prepare students and enrich their knowledge for the hospital clinical education component of the program.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Interpret and effectively use medical terminology.
- Explain the structure and benefits of the medical radiography associations.
- Discuss the provincial health care system, structure and funding allocations.
- Describe current and emerging issues in the Canadian health care system.
- Identify the main components of RIS, HIS and PACS communication systems.
- Discuss professional and ethical conduct standards.
- Relate medico-legal implications of practice for medical imaging technologists.
- Identify common hospital emergency codes and procedures.
- Identify the common pharmaceuticals used in contrast media reaction management.
- Describe the structure and function of the trauma team.
- Discuss the structure and function of the hospital accreditation system.
- Interpret the common infectious conditions which impact daily operation of the radiology department.
- Describe how to manage infection control.
