Course Overview
This course covers the sources of municipal wastewater, factors that affect wastewater flow, measurement of wastewater flow and strength, effects of effluent discharges on the receiving environment, legislation, onsite treatment, screening, comminution, grit removal, flow equalization, the principles of primary sedimentation and secondary treatment including suspended growth, attached growth, and secondary clarification, effluent disinfection, and sludge processing. Practical and operational aspects will be emphasized.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the factors and patterns that affect wastewater flow rates and constituent strength, and develop projections for wastewater flow and load based on service population.
- Discuss the need for wastewater treatment as defined in provincial and/or federal legislation taking into consideration the effects of discharging wastewater into the environment, including an understanding of the potential impacts of wastewater discharges on the receiving environment and dissolved oxygen sag analysis in streams.
- Understand methods of wastewater collection and treatment including centralized and de-centralized (onsite) systems.
- Understand the basic fundamentals of five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), the BOD5 test and its limitations.
- Understand basic design and operation of wastewater preliminary treatment unit processes including screening, comminution (grinding) and grit removal.
- Analyze the design of primary wastewater treatment with a focus on the principles of primary sedimentation.
- Analyze the design of biological (secondary) suspended growth treatment systems such as activated sludge and its variants, including the basic kinetics of suspended growth biological treatment.
- Analyze the design of fixed-film and hybrid biological treatment systems such as trickling filters and rotating biological contactors, including the basic kinetics of fixed growth biological treatment.
- Analyze secondary clarification in biological treatment systems.
- Evaluate wastewater disinfection alternatives.
- Evaluate sludge processing options for a given application, considering the treatment objectives and cost effectiveness of the processing techniques.
