Media Relations has undergone major changes with the advent of social media. This course is designed and taught by media professionals, providing students with a comprehensive overview. Students explore what makes news and how to attract the attention of news decision-makers, media training, and issues management.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain how traditional news media operate and how news is gathered.
- Identify contacts in the news media and make relationships with decision-makers.
- Describe how social media differs from traditional media.
- Write a news release and other media materials tailored to attract the attention of news decision-makers.
- Describe ways to best pitch your ideas, product or organization to media outlets.
- Discuss strategies to help you and/or your organization take advantage of opportunities the media present.
- Detect emerging trends and issues.
- Discuss tactics to manage potentially damaging issues.
- Explain the role of news media to others.
- Describe methods that will help you and/or your organization get your messages out most effectively.
