Course Overview
COMP 1920 has been replaced by COMP 3015 This hands-on course follows on from COMP 1850 and introduces server-side scripting using PHP an open-source, platform-independent, web scripting language. After learning the basic PHP theory and syntax, topics include: textfile manipulation, cookies, regular expressions, sessions, graphics, and database interactions. By the end of this course, students have learned the major functions of PHP server-side scripting and how to freely obtain a wide variety of open-source software tools and code libraries. COMP 1920 is an elective in the “Applied Web Development” associate certificate plus the CST/PTS Diploma.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify, locate, download, and install dozens of free tools useful for server-side Web scripting.
- Explain the theory behind server-side Web scripting.
- Write PHP Web scripts with and without HTML content.
- Install, configure and deploy a working web server to server PHP scripts
- Obtain, process, and store user input from Web pages.
- Use cookies to remember users and user data.
- Use regular expressions to find, process, and validate data.
- Use server-side resources with their Web pages including files, databases, images, etc… located on the server.
- Use sessions to authorize users and persist their data across multiple Web pages.
- Learn other server-side scripting languages with relative ease.
