Course Overview
This webinar introduces rating systems used for sustainability assessment of neighbourhoods and cities. Particular emphasis is given to comparing the strengths and weaknesses of each system in response to sustainability principles of ecological limits, social justice, and economic prosperity. Internationally recognized sustainability assessment tools will be introduced including the recently adopted UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 for Sustainable Communities, ISO 3701 for Sustainable Cities, Living Building Challenge (Living Neighborhoods), Ecocity Standards, One-Planet Living, BREAM, LEED ND and WELL. A comparison of the theoretical underpinnings that inform these tools, their stated goals, and implications for sustainability outcomes will be presented. Key concepts including planetary boundaries, bioregionalism, permaculture, regenerative development, and lifecycle assessment will be explored.
