Course Overview
This introductory course provides the essential foundation for understanding what a geographic information system (GIS) is and what it can do, and how law enforcement agencies are utilizing it. Students learn the basic functions of a GIS, the properties of GIS maps, what coordinate systems and map projections are and why they are important. Students will learn data structures and where disparate geographic data is acquired. In lab exercises, students work with ESRI ArcView to visualize geographic data, create basic maps, query a geo database and conduct spatial analysis using simple analysis tools. Students will explore the various applications of GIS in both crime analysis and intelligence analysis (tactical & strategic), and examine the role of global positioning systems (GPS) in modern law enforcement. This course is primarily intended for individuals who are new to GIS and ArcGIS, or those who are infrequent users of ArcGIS who do not possess a GIS background. Pre- and post-course learning activities will be provided to support the learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain what a GIS is and what it can do for law enforcement agencies.
- Explain how GIS can help front-line police officers in their daily tasks.
- Develop basic GIS maps using ESRI ArcMap.
- Search a GIS database and explain relevant findings.
- Explain what geographic data is, how it is rendered and where to acquire it.
- Interpret crime hotspots and explain their significance to crime reduction efforts.
