Course Overview
The purpose of this 125-hour clinical course is to provide students with opportunities to develop proficiency at a beginner’s level in caring for high acuity patients in a variety of settings. Through application of previous high acuity theory course content (e.g., oxygen supply and demand), students are engaged in critical thinking while performing comprehensive assessments and determining appropriate clinical/ethical decisions. Students learn to further their ability to develop and maintain engaged relationships with patients and families in crisis. Students must have recent acute care experience to enroll in this course.

Learning Outcomes
As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Use clinical decision-making knowledge to make appropriate clinical–ethical decisions in the provision of care for the high acuity patient.
- Perform comprehensive assessments on high acuity patients and clearly articulate and document assessment findings in a systematic manner.
- Apply theoretical concepts related to oxygen supply and demand to form conclusions and explain relevant interventions for high acuity patients.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to provide patient and family-centred care to optimize patient outcomes.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge to provide safe, competent, and ethical nursing care for patients experiencing alterations in oxygen supply and demand due to acute illnesses.
- Demonstrate knowledge and novice ability in providing nursing care for a rapidly deteriorating patient.
- Demonstrate knowledge and novice ability in specialized high acuity skills (for example, dysrhythmia interpretation, arterial blood gas analysis, invasive hemodynamic monitoring and non-invasive pressure ventilation).
- Advocate for safe, competent, and ethical care for high acuity patients.
