Course Details

This course provides an introduction to how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy use in the transportation sector. Students will be able to implement the transportation pyramid as a framework for community energy management. Students will be able to develop and implement policies that support active transportation, low carbon vehicles and transportation behavior change. Students will be able to explain how management of corporate fleets can support reductions in community-based transportation emissions.

CESA 5110 or CESA 5850 (or equivalent from previous offerings of SEMAC Program)

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Justify the role of transportation in community energy management.
  • Assess policy and program approaches to reduce vehicle kilometers travelled.
  • Define mode shift and describe how it supports greenhouse gas emissions reductions and other community goals and how to implement it.
  • Outline the role of increased vehicle efficiency and various policies and techniques in place to improve it.
  • Justify the role of alternative fuels in reducing transportation emissions.
  • Design and implement a community electric vehicle charging station plan.
  • Propose ways that fleet management can help reduce community-level emissions, how it can be implemented, and why communication is important.
