Course Overview
This course was developed to comply with the requirements of the Marine Personnel Regulations on minimum training in personal survival techniques and fire fighting for Canadian seafarers sailing solely on the following: 24 metres or less vessel engaged on a sheltered waters voyage only; 18 metres or less vessel engaged on a voyage in domestic waters; and fishing vessel of 24 metres or less engaged on a voyage in domestic waters.

- A person must be at least 15 years of age to take the SDV-BS course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Have a basic understanding of the hazards related to the marine environment and their own vessel, and of how to prevent shipboard incidents including fire.
- Gain the knowledge they need to raise and react to alarms and deal with emergencies.
- Have an understanding of how to provide assistance in fire and abandonment situations.
- Gain the knowledge and skills required to help them in their own survival and rescue.
