Course Overview
This course covers the fundamental knowledge required for reading and understanding of building permit plans (blueprints) for small residential buildings like single family, duplex, triplex and laneway homes. Course will introduce all types of plans and reports that constitute building permit application package, including surveys, civil plans, architectural plans, structural plans, arborist and energy reports. Course will also provide information about provisions found in BC Building Code Part 9 regarding framing, exterior finishes, energy requirements, fire prevention and soundproofing.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Differentiate between the roles of members of the design and building team – the architect, interior designer, contractor, trades and suppliers.
- Understand information provided on survey, civil and structural plans.
- Interpret architectural drawings in order to accurately translate building elements and dimensions.
- Understand the influence of the building code and municipal bylaws on house design.
