Course Overview
Define the quality control function and identify critical components. The role of product testing is outlined and its relationship to property determination is explained. Product properties and standards are differentiated. Factors affecting plywood and engineered wood products quality properties are examined. Established QC programs are introduced and certifying product assurance agencies are identified and discussed. This course will share the first five weeks of Statistical Process Control (SPC) with WOOD 3108.

- Construct confidence intervals for means using the Central Limit theorem.
- Calculate and construct standard x-bar and R control charts.
- Analyze control charts for non-random patterns.
- Distinguish between process control and process capability.
- Define the role of quality control in plywood and engineered wood products manufacturing and outline the critical components of an effective quality control system.
- Outline the purpose of product testing and identify related procedures and equipment.
- Describe the relationship between product testing and product properties and explain their function in product quality performance.
- Explain the establishment of product properties and the development of product standards.
- Analyse the parameters affecting properties in plywood and engineered wood products.
- Explain the affects that raw materials (veneer / wood particle geometry, etc.) have on plywood and engineered wood products properties.
- Identify and differentiate the characteristics of several formal quality control programs (SPC, TQM, Six Sigma, etc.).
- Identify the major product quality assurance agencies (APA, CPA, NPA, NOA, AHA, etc.) within the Plywood and Engineered Wood Products Industry and explain the role that they play in ensuring adherence to product performance standards.
