Pediatric Critical Care Preceptorship 1 NSPE 7310

As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

• Use a clinical decision making framework to examine and guide clinical decision making in the provision of care to the critically ill pediatric patient.
• Perform comprehensive assessments on pediatric patients in a systematic manner.
• Document and articulate assessment findings and patient and nursing concerns in a systematic and comprehensive manner.
• Provide competent nursing care to pediatric patients and their families that acknowledges and encourages collaboration with the patient, their families and other health care providers.
• Provide safe, competent, and ethical nursing care for pediatric patients experiencing alterations in oxygen supply and demand for selected critical illnesses such as respiratory failure, cardiac failure, acute gastrointestinal illness and hemodynamic instability.
• Provide safe, competent, and ethical nursing care for pediatric patients with experiencing anticipatory pain or situational pain.
• Initiate peripheral IV therapy, manage complex infusions, manage complications of central lines, and administer IV direct medications to pediatric patients.
• Assess learning needs of pediatric patients/families and provide instructions to help them learn the required knowledge and skills to manage illness and health.
• Safely prepare, administer and monitor medications for pediatric patients.
